Keeping the Class Together:
The Birth of the ’67 Webinar

BY Tom Amato

In the first month of the pandemic (March 2020) and after the 67th day gather-anywhere event, a group of classmates dialogued around a message of perspective…” we’ve aged a generation in the past three weeks”. Going on, we acknowledged that” …what matters has sharply come in to focus…community matters”.

At the suggestion of Ken Logan and follow-through leadership of Dick Prentke, the idea was to turn a problem into an opportunity…given the limited ability to connect with classmates physically, why not expand the opportunity to create virtual gatherings. This would build on the success of the class-only seminars at our major reunions.

Thus, in the early days of “Zoom” we met (Logan, Prentke, Amato, Martin, Fiss, Mayer, Poe and Strasburger) as a committee and launched the initiative of class virtual meetings in general and specifically webinars. The first two, focused on the Covid impact on the economy (classmate Alan Blinder) and Princeton University (honorary classmate Chris Eisgruber) were broadly viewed and universally engaging.

As of December 2021, we’ve held 21 webinars…attended by over 2,000 viewers. There’s more to come and if you haven’t seen them, they’re available via the class website (click here).
